Every great product starts with a frustrating problem. For us, it was a deceptively simple question that nobody could answer.
The Question Nobody Could Answer
It happened on a quiet Sunday evening. We were reviewing bank statements, staring at a number that didn't make sense: over $1,200 spent on groceries last month. For a small family of three.
“How is that even possible?” We tried to reconstruct what we'd bought. There were the usual suspects: milk, bread, vegetables. Maybe some snacks. A few treats here and there. But nothing that should add up to that much.
The truth was uncomfortable: we had no idea where our grocery money was going. And neither, it turns out, do most families.
The Tools That Didn't Work
We tried the obvious solutions. Budgeting apps showed us totals but not details. They could tell us we spent $200 at Woolworths on Tuesday, but not whether that was mostly on pantry staples or impulse buys.
Spreadsheets seemed promising until life got busy. Manually logging every item? That lasted about two weeks before it felt like a chore and fell by the wayside.
As for relying on memory? Well, that's how you end up with three jars of mayo in the pantry and no bread.
The gap wasn't in our discipline. It was in our tools. Nothing existed that could tell us what we were actually buying, how prices changed, and where our money truly went.
Building What We Wished Existed
That frustration became the seed of Alydo. We started with a simple idea: what if you could just take a photo of your receipt and have an app figure out the rest?
It sounds simple, but making it work well took countless iterations. Receipts are notoriously messy: faded text, cramped layouts, abbreviations that only the store understands. We built Alydo Intelligence that could parse all of it, learning to read even the most challenging receipts.
But scanning receipts was just the beginning. The real magic happens when you start connecting the dots:
- Price tracking that shows you when items get more expensive, or when there's a deal worth knowing about
- Smart shopping lists that remember what you buy and how often, so you never forget the essentials
- Spending insights that break down exactly where your grocery budget goes, category by category
- Household collaboration that keeps everyone on the same page, whether you're shopping together or dividing the task
More Than an App
We didn't build Alydo to add another app to your phone. We built it to give you something back: clarity about your spending, confidence in your shopping, and maybe a little extra money in your pocket at the end of each month.
The families using Alydo today are discovering things they never knew about their grocery habits. Some find they're spending far more on convenience foods than they realised. Others catch price increases they would have missed. Many simply appreciate finally having an answer to that Sunday-evening question.
Australians who shop for their household spend an average of $207 a week on groceries. That is close to $10,800 a year, and almost none of it is itemised anywhere you can go back and look at.

This Is Just the Beginning
Alydo is the tool we wished existed when we first asked that frustrating question. Now it does, and we're just getting started.
Awareness First
Right now, we're focused on helping you become truly aware of how you spend. Where is your money actually going? What food are you consuming? How do costs vary from trip to trip? These insights are the foundation for smarter decisions.
Building a Better Ecosystem
But our vision goes much further. We want to build an ecosystem that helps the environment by making us all more conscious of our habits. An ecosystem where buying economically also means buying sustainably. Where we reduce waste by not throwing away food that expires before it's consumed, or buying things we don't actually need.
We believe in a fair and sustainable food buying ecosystem that puts you, the consumer, in control. One where you can make informed choices that are good for your wallet and good for the planet.
Learning Together
We also want to help promote good habits and create ways for families to learn from each other. How are others saving money? What products are worth the investment? How can we all consume more responsibly? These are questions we want to help answer, together.
What's Coming Next
In the future, we're building features that will make Alydo even more powerful:
- Know My Pantry to track what you have at home and what's running low
- Nutritional insights to understand what you're really eating: calories, nutrients, and whether your groceries are helping or hurting your health goals
- Recipe suggestions based on your purchase history and what's in stock
- Predictive groceries that anticipate what you'll need before you run out
- And many more features designed around how real families actually shop
Every feature we build comes from the same place: real problems that real families face when trying to make sense of their grocery spending. We're not trying to change how you shop. We're trying to help you understand it better.
Because once you can see where your money goes, you can finally decide if that's where you want it to go.
