There's no single “best” grocery app. There are apps that do specific things brilliantly. Here's an honest breakdown of which apps actually deliver on their promises for Australian shoppers, organised by what you're trying to accomplish.

Full disclosure

We built Alydo, which appears in this list. We've tried to be fair and acknowledge where competitors genuinely excel. You can be the judge of whether we succeeded.

The Grocery App Landscape Has Fragmented

In 2026, “grocery app” can mean wildly different things. Some apps help you compare prices across Coles, Woolworths, and ALDI. Others track your spending. Some help you plan meals. A few try to do everything (usually poorly).

The apps that actually work? They pick one job and do it exceptionally well.

Here's our honest assessment of the best grocery apps available in Australia in 2026, organised by what you actually need.

Best for Price Comparison: WiseList

What it does: Compares prices across Coles, Woolworths, and ALDI before you shop. Its “Split by Store” feature works out how to divide your list between supermarkets. That part needs the paid WiseList+ plan.

Why it's great: WiseList reports more than 400,000 sign-ups and lists 9News, 7News and Yahoo among the outlets that have covered it. You can send a finished list straight into your Coles or Woolworths online cart. It also tracks bills: photograph one and it reminds you before the due date. Source: wiselist.app, checked 11 October 2026.

The catch: Split by Store assumes you're willing to shop at multiple stores. If you prefer one-stop shopping, the savings diminish. The free plan also has limits, including 2 receipt scans a month.

Price: Free to download. WiseList+ is $7.99 month to month, or $49.99 a year (wiselist.app/wiselist-plus) | Download WiseList

Best for: Bargain hunters willing to split their shop across stores for maximum savings.

Was Best for Dietary Needs: Frugl

Frugl compared prices across Coles, Woolworths, ALDI and IGA and let you filter products by diet and allergens. When we checked on 23 October 2026, its App Store and Google Play listings were not found and its website returned an error, so we can no longer recommend it. Our Frugl alternatives page covers what to use for each part of it.

Best for Finding Half-Price Specials: Half Price App

What it does: Lists all the 50% off specials at Coles, Woolworths, Liquorland, and BWS each week. Updates every Wednesday morning when new catalogues drop.

Why it's great: Does one thing and does it well. Instead of flipping through catalogues, you get a clean list of half-price deals. Quick, simple, no friction.

The catch: Only shows 50% off specials. If something is 40% off or there's a multi-buy deal, you won't see it here. Very narrow focus.

Price: Free | Download Half Price

Best for: People who only buy when things are half price.

Best for Browsing Catalogues: Shopfully

What it does: Aggregates digital catalogues from major Australian retailers: Coles, Woolworths, IGA, Officeworks, JB Hi-Fi, Harvey Norman, Big W, Bunnings, and more.

Why it's great: If you like browsing catalogues but hate the paper waste, Shopfully digitises them. Good for spotting deals across categories, not just groceries but electronics, hardware, everything.

The catch: It's basically digital catalogues. No price comparison, no list building, no smart features. If you want active savings help, look elsewhere.

Price: Free | Download Shopfully

Best for: People who enjoy browsing catalogues and prefer digital over paper.

Best for Family Shopping Lists: OurGroceries

What it does: Real-time synced shopping lists across unlimited family members. Works on phones, tablets, browsers, Alexa, and Apple Watch.

Why it's great: Rock-solid synchronisation. When one person adds “milk” at home, it instantly appears on everyone's phone. No duplicate purchases, no “I thought you were getting that.” Available in Australia with local category suggestions.

The catch: That's literally all it does. No price comparison, no spending insights, no receipt scanning. It's a shopping list and nothing more.

Price: Free with ads, or upgrade to remove ads | Download OurGroceries

Best for: Families who just need a shared list and don't want extra features.

Best for Meal Planning + Recipes: AnyList

What it does: Import recipes from any website, plan meals on a calendar, automatically generate shopping lists from recipes. Available in Australia with metric measurements support.

Why it's great: The recipe import actually works well. Plan “Chicken Tikka Masala for Tuesday” and all the ingredients automatically appear on your shopping list. Also supports multi-store price tracking for premium users.

The catch: The best features require AnyList Complete ($9.99/year individual, $14.99/year household). The free version is limited. No integration with Australian supermarkets for price data.

Price: Free with limitations, or $9.99 to $14.99/year for premium | Download AnyList

Best for: People who cook from recipes and want meal planning integrated with shopping.

Best for Diet-Specific Meal Planning: Mealime

What it does: Generates personalised meal plans based on your dietary restrictions, with automatic shopping lists and step-by-step cooking instructions.

Why it's great: Perfect for vegetarian, vegan, keto, paleo, and other specific diets. The app understands your restrictions and only suggests compatible recipes. Nutrition info included for every meal.

The catch: Less flexibility than AnyList: you're choosing from their recipes, not importing your own. Some ingredients may use American names or measurements. Premium features require subscription.

Price: Free with limits, premium subscription for full access | Download Mealime

Best for: People following specific diets who want done-for-you meal planning.

Best for Understanding Your Spending: Alydo

What it does: AI-powered receipt scanning that extracts every item and price from Australian supermarket receipts, then tracks your spending over time with detailed analytics by category.

Why it's great: This is the app we built, so we're biased. But we built it because nothing else answered the question “where is my grocery money actually going?”

Alydo shows you exactly what you're buying, tracks price changes over time at Coles, Woolworths, and ALDI, and reveals spending patterns you never noticed. Its free shopping list app syncs live with everyone you share a list with, takes items by voice, and offers to tick items off when you scan the receipt. Smart restock suggestions round out the feature set.

Each week it also checks the Coles and Woolworths catalogue specials against your own receipts, starting with Victoria. You see which of the things you regularly buy are cheaper this week than you last paid, and at which store. When a special is no cheaper than you already pay, it says so.

The catch: We're newer than established players. No meal planning (yet). And the specials come only from the weekly Coles and Woolworths catalogues, starting with Victoria, so this is not a price comparison across every store.

Price: Free | Try Alydo Free

Best for: People who want to actually understand and control their grocery spending.

Best for the Official Store Experience: Woolworths & Coles Apps

What they do: The official supermarket apps for Australia's two largest grocery chains. Create shopping lists, browse specials, order delivery or Click & Collect, and use Scan & Go in-store.

Why they're great: If you shop exclusively at one chain, these apps are polished and integrated. Woolworths' Scan & Go lets you skip the checkout entirely. Coles offers Flybuys integration. Both have accurate stock levels and easy reordering.

The catch: They'll never show you that the same product is $2 cheaper at the competitor. These apps serve the supermarket's interests, not yours.

Price: Free | Download Woolworths | Download Coles

Best for: Loyal single-store shoppers who want seamless ordering and checkout.

Our Honest Recommendation

Don't try to find one app that does everything. Pick 2 or 3 that excel at what you actually need:

The apps that promise to do everything usually do nothing particularly well. Find the combination that fits how you actually shop.

What We Got Wrong (And What We're Building)

We'll be honest: when we launched Alydo, we thought spending awareness alone would be enough. It's valuable, but users want more integration with the Australian grocery landscape.

Here's what we're working on:

  • Catalogue specials: Each week's Coles and Woolworths catalogue, checked against your own receipts so a special only counts as a saving when it beats what you last paid (already live, starting with Victoria)
  • Predictive restocking: Know what you'll need before you run out
  • Price watches: See when items you buy regularly are on special in the Coles, Woolworths or ALDI catalogues (already live on the web)

We're not trying to replace WiseList. We're building the spending awareness layer that makes all your other grocery tools more effective.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best grocery app in Australia?

There is no single “best” grocery app. The right choice depends on what you need: use WiseList for price comparison across Coles, Woolworths, and ALDI; Mealime for meal plans built around dietary restrictions; OurGroceries for family shopping lists; or Alydo if you want to understand your grocery spending.

Are grocery price comparison apps accurate in Australia?

Mostly. WiseList compares prices at Coles, Woolworths and ALDI. Prices are updated frequently, though in-store specials may occasionally differ. Always check the app before your shop for the most current deals.

Can I use multiple grocery apps together?

Absolutely. We recommend using 2-3 apps that each serve a different purpose. For example, use WiseList for price comparison, OurGroceries for your family shopping list, and Alydo to track your spending over time. Each app does one thing well.

Is there a free grocery app for tracking spending in Australia?

Alydo is free. Scan your receipts from Coles, Woolworths, or ALDI, and the app categorises your purchases and shows you where your money goes.
